Free shipping on DeviantArt.com!
Because really, I feel bad not sharing this. A short excerpt of what I’ve already written on my own DeviantArt journal (which in full is basically just me thanking DeviantArt, but anyway):
Why have I not gotten some of my favorite pieces from here, if I like this Art community so much? Well, it’s not that I don’t want to, and it’s not even that I can’t afford the said Art, because you can actually find some pretty amazing things at pretty cheap prices. It’s that I can’t afford the shipping fees.
Forget about Art, that’s completely out of reach. Even merchandise. A Fella plushie for example, an item that costs 20$ (or 13€ ), will turn into a 40$ item (that’s 27€ ) with the shipping fees for Portugal added. Regardless of the physical size of the item you’re trying to buy, the shipping fees will double or triple its cost.

A couple of days ago came the announcement that, until the 27th, all shipping to everywhere in the world will be free. Free shipping, until the 27th. All of a sudden, no warning and no special occasion that I’m aware of.
[...]
I’m hoping that if this is successful, if DeviantArt realizes that free shipping promotions every now and then – or just more reasonable shipping fees – will actually earn them more money than simply going with whatever delivery service is available (which I hear in America is usually FedEx), I’m hoping they’ll change permanently and all this amazing Art will become more available for everyone.
The original announcement, in case you missed the link above, is here.
I’m not exaggerating on how much the shipping fees are. And I used to complain about Amazon and its Postage and Packaging and VATs. Ah.
So, free shipping, from the biggest online Art community. That’s pretty amazing. Although I’m very extremely tight on money, I am going to try and get something I’ve had my eyes on for a while. Because like I said, it’d be great if they changed their delivery services permanently, but it’s impossible to know if that’s going to happen.
So far, I’ve decided on six pieces I’d like to have, which all add up to 8€ (or 12 dollars). Which is absolutely nothing if you were to compare with what it would cost with shipping included.
Are you going to take up this opportunity?
i’m not because i’m on deviant art myself trying to make some money.
Sorry, i mean’t squeeze some money.
Maybe because of the shipping fees. lol
Well yes, I guess it goes both ways, it’s good for the artists too. Since the fees are gone for a while now, maybe you’ll be able to sell more.
Good luck!
Deviantart as in…select image, “save as…” and get it to your PC? Something is amiss.
Or print it?
That’s not very nice.
And you’re sort of missing out on a lot if that’s what you think. DeviantArt is a community for art and artists, not a stock website. Artists take serious time and effort creating those images, and then they share it with the community. It’s not your right to go take and print the images yourself.
You do want to support the artist as much as you can, because you know, that’s where the beautiful art comes from. Leaving a comment or a critique, adding to your favorites, etc. If you can do it financially as well and purchase some quality controlled, non-watermarked, beautiful matte prints, then you should too.
(inb4 I sound too serious, I do take this pretty seriously. Please respect that.)
I know and respect your opinions, don’t worry.
But I see Deviantart just as another website, for example like Fanfic.org, where one posts his/her “art” and you enjoy it virtually. Yes, you can buy it and whatnot – but I don’t see the point, but perhaps I’m that dumb and I can’t see the next Da Vinci among the infinite drawings of hentai/anime/videogame in deviantart.
Saying “art” in quotation marks or only referring to the anime category of DeviantArt (which isn’t that infinite) doesn’t seem all that respectful, but I’ll take it as it being because you don’t know the community.
No dumbness, just different points of view, but maybe you could open your horizons and take a look at art – no quotation marks – that people from today create. Art isn’t just Da Vincis and Picassos.
And the point. The point is to support and thank the artists who make the beautiful art that makes you happy. And the point of owning the said art is to have the privilege of looking at it everyday when you walk round your house, which is automatically made more beautiful just by having that art on its walls.
Please, don’t be mad at me
I respect your point of views, I used to collect tons of beautiful pictures on my HDD, but when the format c time came and I had to save my files, I neglected them.
But I know my weakpoint, I’m more of a book guy and I’d rather have a shelf full of books than a wall full of pictures, that’s me though.
Well, I kinda love nature pictures and space, so :\ But although I know how to appreciate them, I’m incapable of spending money with them.
Not mad at all, it’s just something I take seriously. And I do consider art theft (or copyright infringement) to be quite a bad thing to do. You’re taking the artistic creation from an individual who took their time and effort into making it, and it’s just not your right.
Much worse than downloading a movie or a song in my opinion, which is also copyright infringement technically.
I’m a literature student, of course I love books too, but no one says you can’t have both. What you spend your money on is up to you. What I do think is incredibly disrespectful is taking other people’s art as free stock, printing it yourself and calling it your own. It’s a very personal thing and if you’re not willing to spend the money on it, then I don’t think you should have it.
I do not call them my own! Alas, I just download lolcats to show around, so its ok?
Meh, that came out wrong. If you own it physically, but you didn’t pay for it, but you have it, while not having payed for it, you claim the thing as your own. -> is what I meant, if that makes it any clearer.
You downloaded LOLcats from a LOLwebsite on which people upload their LOLpictures so they can be captioned by other people and shown around, to show around. That seems to be fine, and not about this kind of Art at all. =P
Respect artists and respect copyright. ‘Tis all I’m saying.
